## How Many Sudoku Puzzles Are There?

Sudoku is one of the most popular puzzle games. It is played on a nine-by-nine grid, with the goal of filling each square, row, and column with a single number from 1 to 9. The rules of the game are relatively simple.

There are two types of Sudoku puzzles. The first type is a standard Sudoku puzzle. This is the most basic version and can be solved easily by plugging in all possible combinations of numbers into the 81 squares.

A second type of Sudoku puzzle is called a “multi-solution” Sudoku puzzle. These puzzles are designed to have a unique solution. However, they can also be difficult to solve.

According to mathematician Frazer Jarvis and computer scientist Bertram Felgenhauer, there are more than five billion Sudoku puzzles in existence. If every person in the world tried to solve each one, it would take 173 years.

Felgenhauer and Jarvis then worked out the number of completions for each Sudoku grid. Their calculations revealed that there are 6,670,903,752,021,072,936,960 possible Sudoku puzzles.

Obviously, this is a huge number. But, if we think about it in terms of how much time it would take to solve all the Sudokus, it becomes more manageable. For instance, it would take about a hundred billion pages of text to fully describe all of the solutions to a puzzle.
