Why Are Bats a Symbol Of Halloween?
Whether you love horror films or not, bats are a familiar part of Halloween. Many Halloween decorations feature these nocturnal creatures, which have long been associated with the holiday. Their association with Halloween has its roots in Celtic legend. The burning of large bonfires during Samhain was thought to attract bats and other flying insects. Bats feed on insects, and their presence is often associated with ghosts.
In ancient myths, bats were considered sacred animals of Pluto’s wife. They were also associated with witches and vampires. Their ability to fly and feed on blood has long made them popular in folklore. Those early observations have led to a connection between bats and the supernatural. Although these associations are not entirely clear, many cultures have embraced bats as symbols of death and rebirth.
